Seminole Towne Center Mall in Sanford to close for major redevelopment: What we know so far

The mall portion of the Seminole Towne Center in Sanford now has its closing date.

Shop owners were told to leave by Jan. 31. It’s the latest chapter for the dying mall. The anchor stores will remain.

For small business owner Douglas Filler, the closure means retirement.

"I was just determined to stay until the last moment, so the timing was right for me," Filler said.

Aside from the slew of empty storefronts, we found signs saying shops have already left.

"It’s just a declining atmosphere instead of a dynamic one," Filler said.

MORE HEADLINES:

The mall opened in 1995. Now, parts will be demolished to make room for what comes next.

The City of Sanford said it’ll become a mix of shops, entertainment options, and apartments.

"This will be the largest redevelopment of a retail property in Seminole County history," said City of Sanford Economic Development Director Brady Lessard.

Lessard said redevelopment has been made a little harder by the fact that more investors are joining. He said that's a good thing.

Lessard estimated construction work will start within the next six months.

The current owners didn’t respond to our request for comment.
