Man injured in shooting involving deputies amid Pine Hills drive-by investigation

A man has been injured in a shooting incident in Pine Hills involving two deputies with the Orange County Sheriff's Office, according to Sheriff John Mina.

SKYFOX was over the scene outside a home on Montague Place, just after 3 p.m. Several deputies and crime scene technicians were seen in the neighborhood is west of Pine Hills Drive and north of West Colonial Drive.

According to Orange County Sheriff John Mina, the activity stemmed from an investigation into two drive-by shootings earlier in the day at a residence on San Jose Boulevard between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Detectives identified a suspect in that investigation, leading them to the home on Montague Place.

When deputies arrived, they encountered several individuals in the driveway, including the 16-year-old suspect. Sheriff Mina said the teen was armed with a handgun that had an extended magazine, prompting deputies to issue repeated commands to drop the weapon.

Deputies ultimately opened fire, injuring a 24-year-old man in the foot. He was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"I reviewed the body-worn camera footage, the subject had a gun, he knew we were law enforcement --- our deputies were in full uniform --- so, you know, you've got to follow the commands of law enforcement," Mina explained, defending the actions of the deputies. "If you follow the command's of law enforcement and surrender peacefully, you won't get shot."

A handgun with an extended magazine was recovered at the scene, the sheriff said.

"We anticipate numerous charges on several individuals related to the drive-by shootings and the incident on Montague Place," Mina said.

As is standard protocol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is reviewing the shooting. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office will also conduct an internal investigation, and the two deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave with pay.

No deputies were injured in the incident.
