ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Two kids were arrested earlier this week following a toy gun scare near Lake Brantley High School, according to the Altamonte Spring Police Department.
Police responded to the school shortly before 3 p.m. Monday after receiving a report of shots being fired in the area by several juveniles.
As a result, Lake Brantley High School and nearby Forest City Elementary School, were placed on a Code Red lockdown for safety.
Witnesses told police that as they were leaving the school to go home, they saw a group of juveniles standing across the street from the high school and one appeared to have a gun in his hands. That person then started firing the weapon.
The witnesses reported hearing about 20 pops and one of the juveniles began to run as another filmed the incident.
The person holding the gun began to fire the weapon in the air while laughing, according to an arrest report. Investigators later determined the gun was a toy.
Based on witness statements and video evidence, police had probable cause to arrest the juveniles on charges of trespassing on school grounds and for disrupting schools, as they knowingly interrupted the dismissal of both schools, authorities said.
Since the juveniles had no prior criminal history, officials indicated they were in favor of them participating in the Civil Citation Program.
