New details in Winter Park woman's murder
WINTER PARK, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - New details have emerged in the murder of a Winter Park woman back in September.
Scott Nelson is now charged with murder and kidnapping of Jennifer Fulford, three months after she was killed. According to police, Nelson confessed to everything.
The Winter Park nanny was found dead in the woods with her whole face covered with duct tape and her hands and feet bound. Detectives say Fulford died from asphyxia and being stabbed.
"Unfortunately, by the time law enforcement even knew of the event, she had already been killed," explains Danny Banks, a spokesman with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which assisted Winter Park Police in the case.
It all started on September 27 when investigators say Nelson broke into a Winter Park mansion with a sharp instrument. They say he kidnapped Fulford and drove to a Wells Fargo bank, withdrawing $300 using her bank cards.
In surveillance, Nelson is spotted wearing a white t-shirt, towel around his neck and a plaid watch band. Police say he returned to get more money later on, but he was denied.
The next day, Fulford's car is found in a Publix parking lot. Inside the vehicle was a white towel, t-shirt and watch band. Police say they match the items worn by Nelson in the bank surveillance. They also say DNA blood stains also matched Nelson's and the victim.
"Our effort was immediately to try to bring him into custody as soon as we knew he was our suspect, we felt really really confident he had committed this crime."
Ten days later, investigators say Nelson took an Amtrak train to Jacksonville, where he was eventually captured.
'He was a danger before, he was a danger now, and he doesn't need to be returned back to society so we're really optimistic about a successful prosecution."
Police say a comforter and beer can found in the car were similar to ones missing from the house where Fulford worked.
Nelson is also charged in federal court for violating probation, stemming from a bank robbery in Volusia County.
