WATCH: Navy's earthquake-inducing underwater blasts

DAYTONA BEACH (FOX 13) - This summer, a series of Florida earthquakes turned out to be the result of some offshore naval weapons testing.  Now we're getting a closer look at the monstrous underwater blasts.

The U.S. Navy this week released video of what they call "Full Ship Shock Trials" involving the USS Independence.  The tests involved setting off a series of 10,000-pound explosive charges underwater off the Florida coast, not far from the ship.

The goal of the tests was to see how well the Independence weathered the nearby blasts.

"The ship performed exceptionally well, sustaining minimal damage and returned to port under her own power," a Navy statement explained.

The Navy did not specifically say where the tests occurred, but U.S. Geological Survey detected seismic activity -- the equivalent of a 3.7 earthquake on the Richter scale -- about 100 miles off the coast of Volusia County back in July.
