University of Central Florida student confirmed dead
ORLANDO, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - The University of Central Florida (UCF) Police Department has confirmed that a student was confirmed dead after being found unresponsive in her on-campus residence on Tuesday morning.
Police say that emergency responders found Alyssa Michelle Lewis, a 19-year-old student from Jacksonville, in her fourth semester, dead in her room in the Lake Claire apartments. Family members who had been unable to reach her called 911 Tuesday morning after they went into her apartment and found her.
The UCF Police say they are investigating with support from the Orange County Sheriff's Office. After the initial review, they do not believe the death is suspicious and there is no threat to the campus community. A cause of death is not yet determined.
Adrienne Frame, UCF's Associate Vice President and Dead of Students, made a statement saying that "We offer our most sincere sympathies to Alyssa’s family and loved ones, and we will make all of our resources available to support them."
Classes for the fall semester concluded Saturday, December 9th, and the residence halls closed for most students on Sunday, December 10th. The deceased student's roommates had already checked out by Sunday.
Police say that counselors and victim advocates have been available at the scene for family members and other students. Counselors are available to talk with any students who need assistance.
