NHC monitoring 3 disturbances in Caribbean, Atlantic

There are three disturbances in the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean that are being watched for potential tropical development, according to the National Hurricane Center, a reminder that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is not yet over.

ORLANDO, Fla. - There are three disturbances in the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean that are being watched for potential tropical development, according to the National Hurricane Center, a reminder that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is not yet over.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1–November 30, 2024. If any develop, the next name on the list would be Patty. Here is the latest on the three disturbances and their chances of further development.

Southwest Caribbean Sea - Disturbance #1

The National Hurricane Center said an area of low pressure will likely form in the next day or two in the southwest Caribbean Sea and could become a tropical depression this weekend or early next week, as it moves north toward the Gulf of Mexico.

When it develops, if it will, where it will go, and how strong that system could be, are unknown at this time. It's too early to predict that. However, the models right now show confidence that it will travel into the Gulf of Mexico, but whether it will make it to the United States or Florida isn't known. 

As of Thursday afternoon, it has a 60% chance of development over the next 7 days, which has steadily increased over the last few days.

Northeastern Caribbean Sea - Disturbance #2

There is a second disturbance east of disturbance #1 that is also being monitored. The National Hurricane Center said a trough of low pressure near Puerto Rico is producing widespread clouds and showers over the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Leeward Island.

This system has a low chance of development - 10% – over the next 48 hours and seven days, the NHC said.

North Atlantic - Disturbance #3

A third disturbance formed Thursday in the far east Atlantic Ocean. The NHC said showers and thunderstorms formed about 550 miles west of the western Azores.

Any potential development of this system would be slow, the NHC said. Currently, this system has a low chance – 20% – of development over the next seven days.
