Woman shot, killed by husband following argument in Daytona Beach, police say

The Daytona Beach Police Department has charged a man with first-degree murder after he allegedly shot a woman, before turning the gun on himself.

Shantell Adkins, 35, is accused of shooting his wife, Shawntai in the midst of an argument on Thursday. Shortly before 6:40 p.m. on Thursday, officers were called to a home on Fulton Street for a shooting.

When they arrived, they said they found Shawntai who had been shot near the front door, and Shantell lying in the front yard with a gunshot wound. He was treated and is expected to recover.

At some point, the man armed himself with a rifle and shot his wife, before turning the gun on himself, police said. She died at the scene.

Neighbors of the couple told FOX 35 News they found the incident to be a complete surprise.

"They seemed like great people, like a great couple," said Theodore Carter who lives a few houses down. "You would never think that something like that would ever happen."

Carter was one of dozens who looked on from their front yard as the police investigated the crime scene.

"To know that this happened. This is just heartbreaking," Samesha Johnson, one of Shawntai's college classmates.

Johnson stopped by the home on Friday to pay her respects. She said she would remember Shawntai as a loving and kind person.

"I’m praying for both families, and it’s just sad."

The nature of the argument at the center of the incident is unclear. Police have not released any other details at this time.
