Hurricane Michael blamed for damage to Daytona Beach motel

Hurricane Michael is hitting close to home. One band brought gusts so strong, it ripped the roof right off a hotel. The strong gust in Daytona Beach was caught on camera.

The part of the roof that flew off the Mayan Inn now just a pile on the ground and people in Daytona Beach can’t stop talking about the roof flying off.

It’s the moment Hurricane Michael turned on Daytona Beach. A fast-moving cell from the Hurricane on the other side of the state tore through Daytona, ripping part of the roof off the Mayan Inn.

Brady Bowles works across the street at the Salty Dog Surf Shop.

“It was slow here. No one coming in, because of the weather. I figured I’d just take a Snapchat video, just because and post it,” said Bowles.

That’s when the roof took flight. Brady captured it on his phone.

“I felt the gust of wind and then it happened. I thought wow that’s kind of crazy.”

Pieces of the roof now sit in an empty lot next to the hotel.

“It’s just crazy. Mother Nature kind of shows you how small you are,” said Salty Dog Surf Shop general manager Max Miller.

“I took a video and I just got lucky with the timing,” said Bowles.

No one was hurt. The hotel didn’t have to evacuate, and business is running as normal.
