Florida girl, 10, killed on New Year's Day by celebratory gunfire, police say

A 10-year-old girl in Florida was shot and killed shortly after midnight on New Year's Day by what is suspected to have been celebratory gunfire, police said.

The shooting was reported at 12:04 a.m. – four minutes after many celebrated the start of 2025 – in the area of NW 27 Avenue and NW 21 Street in Miami, according to a news release from the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Police identified the girl as Yaneliz Munguia.

"This heartbreaking incident serves as a devastating reminder that what goes up must come down," the police department said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter.

Earlier on Tuesday, Kissimmee Police said 56-year-old Carmen Rosa Neira Ochoa was shot and killed shortly after midnight in what was also suspected of being celebratory gunfire.
