Report: Surfer catching wave gets bitten by shark at New Smyrna Beach
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - A 40-year-old man is recovering after officials said he was bitten by a shark on Tuesday.
Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue reports that the man was bitten just before noon at New Smyrna Beach. They said he was surfing when he caught air on a wave and landed on the shark.
The man was bitten on the hand and on the calf, according to officials. They said the shark was believed to be about 6 1/2 feet long. The man was treated at the scene by the Ocean Rescue crew.
According to beach officials, Tuesday's attack is the 11th shark bite in Volusia County of 2019.
