Crews working on DeBary sinkhole that opened for a second time
DEBARY, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - Ally Leonard has been living with a sinkhole since Thursday.
“Please get it fixed,” she pleaded, “hurry!”
She and her neighbors live near the Debary sinkhole that's swallowed part of State Road 17-92, at Hollow Pine Drive.
“We're all coming out here, seeing if it's getting bigger and what it's doing,” Leonard said, “there's no predicting these things!”
People living near the sinkhole also say that their water is turning brown, as murky water comes out of their faucets. Officials say a water pipe inside that sinkhole burst, so they had to reroute the water. Officials say that it is safe to drink.
FDOT crews have been working since Friday morning to fix the sinkhole. It has been filled-in with dirt. The next step is to inject grout into it, to stabilize the ground. But officials say it could up to 21 days before the sinkhole is repaired. The price tag for this is looking like $600,000 too.
Leonard said the work is causing headaches. “They're clanking together, waking us up. It's getting ridiculous.”
Liz Pabon, who also lives near the sinkhole, said it’s also affecting traffic in the area. “There's no consideration with traffic, whatsoever. Even with the buses with the stop signals, cars keep going.”
While FDOT works to seal the dirt in-place, 17-92 will remain closed. They said the job may take several more days.
