Body camera video released in shooting involving Orange County deputies
WINDERMERE, Fla. (FOX 35 Orlando) - The Orange County Sheriff's Office on Thursday released a deputy’s body worn camera video, showing the moments leading up to an exchange of gunfire with a domestic violence suspect.
The video shows the suspect, 23-year-old Laforest Duron Gray Jr., holding his phone in his left hand. Deputies can be heard ordering Gray to put both hands up in the air. When Gray finally lifts his left hand, the video shows Gray holding onto a silver pistol with his right hand, pointing it at deputies and firing off a round -- that, as investigators say three deputies fired at Gray. Investigators say Gray live-streamed the entire encounter on his Instagram account from the phone in his left hand.
According to an arrest affidavit, the whole ordeal started with a neighbor calling 911 to report a domestic violence incident between Gray and his wife. That neighbor told deputies that Gray's wife jumped into his car asking for help. Seconds later, Gray opened the car door, dragging her out by her hair and implying to the driver that he had a gun, the report states.
Remarkably, no one was struck in the gun battle. Deputies used a K-9 to get the suspect into custody. He is now charged with four counts of attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, domestic violence, and burglary. He is being held at the Orange County Jail without bond.
