Sheriff praises K-9 that recovered from overdose

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - A police dog that was given medication used to reverse an overdose after he suffered a reaction from sniffing drugs is being praised for a job well done.

K-9 Jake on Monday received some well wishes from Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey. We got to meet Jake at the veterinarian's office, where he has been on the mend.  His tool for crime fighting is his nose. 

Vets were able to help the golden retriever after he put his nose on a piece of luggage with a potent, almost deadly, powder form of a party drug. Jake works at Port Canaveral, and last week, as passengers were boarding the Norwegian Epic cruise ship  for an electronic music festival, he picked up the scent of the contraband. 

Jake had seizure-like symptoms and lost motor skills, but the dog was given Narcan as a precaution, since deputies didn't know what was causing the reaction.

Sheriff Ivey held a news conference outside the Courtney Animal Hospital in Merritt Island where he praised the staff and welcomed Jake back to work.

Jake wasn't expected to suffer any long-term effects and has returned to work.
