Storylines: Orlando City vs. Colorado Rapids

Winning in Rapid Succession

Since entering the league in 2015, Orlando City boasts a 3-0-1 record against the Rapids. Colorado is one of three teams that the Lions have never lost to in their five-year history, the others being Real Salt Lake and the San Jose Earthquakes. City also holds a +5 goal differential against Saturday’s opposition, its best against any MLS team. From 2015 to 2018, the Lions did not allow a goal from the Rapids, recording a 296-minute shutout streak, its best against any league opponent in Club history.

[Dom]inant

After registering his third goal of the season on Sunday, forward Dom Dwyer continued his streak of goal contribution in 2019. In each of the five games this season, Dwyer has recorded either a goal or an assist for City, and is the only player in MLS to boast such a streak this season.

Dwyer’s goal on Sunday also served as his 20th as a Lion in the MLS era, making him the third in Club history to reach that mark. Former Lions Cyle Larin (47) and Kaka (24) are the only others to reach the 20-goal mark for the Club. Including his first stint in Orlando in USL Pro, Dwyer has now scored 39 goals as a Lion.

League Leaders

Two Lions currently sit atop the league in different statistical categories. With his third assist of the season on Sunday, Nani is tied for the league lead with eight other players, four of which are past MLS All-Stars in Carlos Vela, Darwin Quintero, Alberth Elis, and Diego Valeri.

Goalkeeper Brian Rowe currently shares the league-lead in saves with 18 alongside Stefan Frei of the Seattle Sounders. Colorado goalkeeper Tim Howard sits behind the two with the next best total in MLS with 17.

Homegrown Talent

On Sunday, Homegrown forward Benji Michel made his City debut when he entered the match in the 77th minute. Michel is now the 13th different Lion to make his debut in 2019, a number that sits at second-most in a month in Club history behind only March of 2015, the first of the MLS era. With his appearance on Sunday, he also became the third Orlando City Academy-product to appear for the first team.
