Zoo mourns death of baby giraffe after tragic leg fracture

A zoo in Texas is mourning the loss of a baby giraffe, who died after suffering a severe leg fracture. 

The Abilene Zoo said the giraffe, named Zahara, died October 2. The cause of the leg fracture is still undetermined. 

Zoo officials said Zahara was born July 20 to parents Malaika and Congo. The public voted for her name over the summer.

Rare spotless baby giraffe born at Tennessee zoo

"She was a precious member of our giraffe herd with her playful and spirited personality," zoo officials said in an online news release. "Her growing bond with her family endeared her to all who met her. We know this news will be heartbreaking to the many who followed her journey from birth."

"We are devastated by this tragic loss," Robert Trejo, General Curator,, added. "Zahara brought immense joy to our zoo family and the community. We appreciate the overwhelming support and love shown for Zahara since her birth, and our hearts go out to everyone who felt a connection to her, especially her primary zookeepers."

Zoo officials said they are monitoring the remainder of the zoo herd, ensuring their safety and health.
