If you're looking for a way to volunteer your time to shelter animals but not sure if you can commit to long-term care, the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando is allowing people to 'check out' a dog from their facility!

It's called their 'Hound Around Town' program. Here's how it works: dogs can be checked out 7 days a week between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. for a maximum of two hours.

Dogs can only be taken to the approved locations near the Sanford and Orlando shelters to take "a walk, a hike, to your favorite dog friendly restaurant, or relax in a park." Dog parks are off limits and your pal cannot socialize with other animals.

"Nose to nose introductions are a no, no!"

Your pooch must remain on a leash at all times and they must be back at the shelter by 5:00 p.m. on the same day "so they can be tucked in for the night prior to closing."

The Pet Alliance says it's a great way for the adoptable pets to be seen out in public and possibly catch the eye of someone looking for a new family member.

"Not only is it a nice day out for you, but our shelter dogs will be furever grateful for the chance to relax out of the shelter environment, sniff all Pet Alliance approved sights, and get exposure to adopters."

Anyone who would like to participate in the 'Hound Around Town' program must be 18-years-old and have a valid driver's license. Participants must complete the sign-up form and watch the video below prior to you and your dog's first 'date.'

The Pet Alliance encourages those taking dogs out to snap lots of pictures and use the hashtag #houndaroundtown to help spread the word!
