Wise County crash: 4 killed, 10 injured after passenger van flips

ALVORD,Texas - Emergency crews are working the scene of a major crash in Wise County that they are calling a "mass casualty incident."

Four people are dead, and 10 others were injured, according to Texas DPS.

The crash happened near the northbound lanes of Highway 287, near the FM 1655 exit in Alvord.

Around 8 a.m., a passenger van carrying 14 people veered into the median and over-corrected, leaving the road and rolling several times, ejecting multiple people inside.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth passenger died at the hospital, according to DPS. The driver was one of the four people who were killed.

Three passengers were flown to hospitals with critical injuries, seven were taken by ambulance with non-critical injuries and one passenger was taken by ambulance with a minor injury.

Texas DPS says only one person was wearing a seatbelt. That person was able to walk away from the crash.

"Wearing your seatbelt is going to save your life," said Texas DPS Lt. Tony De La Cerda. "We emphasize that you wear it no matter if you are in the driver seat, no matter if you are the co-pilot, no matter if you're in the backseat."

Officials say the van was coming from Florida, but at this time they do not know where they were heading.

Crews are working to identify the people involved in the crash.

Texas DPS says no children were in the vehicle.

The identities will be released once families have been notified.
