Tuna recalled for concern it may be under cooked

Two companies announced voluntary recalls Thursday of several canned tuna products according to the Food and Drug Administration's website.

The first recall, from Bumble Bee Foods, was due to possible contamination by 'spoilage organisms or pathogens.' The company said there were 'deviations' in the  commercial sterilization process at the facility where the tuna was canned. The facility is not owned by Bumble Bee Foods.

According to the FDA's recall information website, the deviations could cause "contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens, which could lead to life-threatening illness if consumed."

No reports of illness had been associated with the product as of this writing.

A total of 31,579 cases of the product were included in the recall, which have production dates in February, 2016 and were distributed nationally. The products would be marked with a can code starting with "T" (example: TOA2BSCAFB) and have the following "best by" dates:

The second recall was announced by Tri-Union Seafoods. According to FDA's recall information website, the company was voluntarily recalling 107,280 cans of Chicken of the Sea brand 5 oz. canned chunk light tuna in oil and 5 oz. canned chunk light tuna in water.

The company said the product may have been undercooked due to an equipment malfunction, which was uncovered during a routine inspection. The deviations were part of the "commercial sterilization process and could result in contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens, which could lead to life-threatening illness if consumed."

It was unclear if the facility or the recall was connected to the Bumble Bee Tuna recall.

No reports of illness had been associated with the product as of this writing.
