Titusville's Space View Park still closed after Irma

TITUSVILLE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Almost a year after Hurricane Irma, fences are still up at Space View Park, keeping people away from the damage there. People are asking - what's taking so long? We got a hold of Brevard County for answers.

You can see straight to the Kennedy Space Center from the park, and it's a popular place to watch rocket launches. Bob and Evelyn Levy stopped by to see the monuments there.

“We thought everything was pretty nice except when we walked to the end of the walkway here and there's hurricane damage,” Levy said, “it's been almost a year and nothing's been done with it.”

We wanted to get a better look at the problem, so we got in a boat at the Titusville marina and came down to see what it's like from the other side. You can see all the damage Hurricane Irma left behind, at Space View Park. 

They say shoreline damage is one of the biggest problems. They say it's expensive to repair and takes a long time. The dock was also destroyed with a single boat left behind, and county officials say a lot of that work is underwater.

“The shoreline damage, a lot of concrete damage up and down right here, the seawall that protects Space View Park, that's torn apart and we're gonna have to replace it, so those are the major things we're looking at,” explained Brevard County Parks & Recreation spokeswoman Shay Saldana.

Saldana said it's common for this work to take more than a year, and visitors will have to be patient. “It's not something that's gonna be done overnight. It's definitely gonna take time but since we're reviewing that, we'll meet with the engineers and put together a timeline.”

They'll be developing that timeline over the next couple of weeks, and say the work will take at least another six months.
