ORLANDO, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - It's been nine months since Hurricane Maria. Hundreds of Puerto Rican families are still living in Central Florida because of the storm, but their time is running out.
Right now, there are more than 600 Puerto Rican families in Central Florida through the FEMA Shelter Program, but this Saturday, that program is coming to an end. That means all those people will have to find a new place to live.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, many of these families are here in Central Florida. Osceola and Orange County lead the state by a wide margin. Seminole County is fifth on the list, with more than 30 families.
This all comes as FEMA is sending millions of dollars to Florida for a different disaster, Hurricane Irma. The Florida Division of Emergency Management is getting nearly $70 million to help cover the expenses of saving lives and property.
The FEMA housing deadline in the past has been pushed back several times, but FEMA says it will not happen again.
