'Terrible': Neighbors mourn woman killed in Melbourne house fire over the weekend

A home burst into flames and killed a woman on Saturday who couldn’t make it out in time.

What we know: The fatal fire happened on West Elm Drive, and the state fire marshal is investigating what sparked the flames just off U.S. 1.

Neighbors told FOX 35 they didn’t hear the fire or smell smoke until they went outside. They went out because they lost power in their own homes and wanted to see what was going on.

At the burned-out home on Monday, damage showed that most of the fire was contained to the front of the property with part of the roof caving in. Caution tape surrounded the home.

Neighbors are devastated someone lost their life like this.

"Terrible, terrible, terrible, and I’m sorry for any loss of life in a fire," said Carol Szurka who’s lived nearby the home that caught fire for 30 years.

Neighbors are mourning the tragic loss of 44-year-old Crystal Bankston. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office confirmed she is the only person who died in the burning house.

The state fire marshal is now trying to figure out what sparked the flames in the first place.

David Farrand recalls seeing "some smoke off in the distance."

He shared photos with FOX 35’s Esther Bower of the fire when the home was surrounded by first responders.

Brevard County Fire Rescue says the house fire was called in around 5 p.m.

David says he lost electricity at his home for about an hour due to the fire.

"It’s not easy losing anybody no matter whether it’s in a fire or through natural causes," he said.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office says there were no signs of arson or criminal activity causing the fire.

Neighbors say they were using space heaters on Saturday themselves and wonder if they could be to blame.

"Be really careful what you put near the space heater," said Carol.

She and other residents tell us they’ve had neighborhood fires in the past but none where someone died.

"I feel for their loss," concluded David.

The medical examiner will make the final call on what exactly killed this victim, whether it was smoke or something else.

We are still working to confirm and have asked the county whether the property had working smoke detectors at the time of the fire.
