Teen will be tried as adult in shooting that left Oak Hill father paralyzed
OAK HILL, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - One of two teenagers arrested in the shooting of an Oak Hill father who was left paralyzed after being struck in the neck by a bullet has been charged as an adult.
James Zyquis Powell, 15, has been held in juvenile detention since his arrest following the shooting on Feb. 16. State Attorney R.J. Larizza on Tuesday announced Powell has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm.
Larizza said a decision regarding charges against co-defendant, Sylvana Leslie, 17, has yet to be made.
According to Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, 45-year-old Joel Tatro allowed his teenage sons to have friends over for a party on the evening of Feb. 16. Chitwood said Powell and Leslie showed up uninvited and would not leave when asked to do so. That prompted an altercation and a shooting that left Tatro critically injured, the sheriff says.
The two teenagers turned themselves into authorites in the days that followed.
