Teen in critical condition after being struck by vehicle

The Daytona Beach Police Department says that a teen is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle on Saturday night.

They say that 26-year-old Ciera Parris was driving a 2008 Volkswagen sport utility vehicle on Nova Road, just north of Madison Avenue, when she struck a 15-year-old teen. The teen was heading east, attempting to cross Nova's northbound lanes.

Officers say they learned that the teen had been riding on the handlebars of the bicycle as the bicyclist crossed the southbound lanes of Nova, heading east. The bicycle reportedly had no lights.

Police say that a van who was heading south on Nova swerved to avoid hitting the teen. The driver of the van blew his horn, prompting the teen to slam on the bicycle's breaks. The teen was thrown from the bike, got up, and began running across the northbound lanes of Nova, heading east. This is when the teen was hit.

The teen landed in the median separating the southbound and northbound lanes, according to police.

The teen was reportedly taken to Halifax Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.
