Suspect killed after police pursuit breaks out in Port Orange

The Port Orange Police say that on Friday, November 3rd, their officers were approached by a white male operating a vehicle in the City Center area. As officers began to to speak with the person, he abruptly left the scene, striking an officer with the side of his vehicle.

The report goes on to say that the suspect led officers in a short pursuit to a parking lot on Clyde Morris BLVD. The suspect exited his car, firing multiple rounds form a handgun at the officers. The officers returned fire, thus killing the suspect.

The suspect has been identified by police as Robert A. Powell, 53, of Daytona Beach.

The three Port Orange Police Officers involved in the shooting are: 

•    Sergeant Warren Carmen (11-year veteran)
•    Officer Wayne Jean (6-year veteran)
•    Officer Jacob Bissonnette (1-year)

Officer Wayne Jean was originally struck by the side of the suspect's vehicle during initial contact. He's been treated and released from the hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, as it is an officer-involved shooting. All three officers have been placed on administrative leave until the investigation wraps.
