Dallas police have made an arrest in the beating of a transgender woman. The case is under investigation as a possible hate crime.

Police arrested 29-year-old Edward Thomas late Sunday for his alleged role in the attack. He's charged with aggravated assault.

On Friday night, police said a man attacked the transgender woman after a minor car accident outside the Royal Crest Apartments in Southeast Dallas.

As the beating happened, a crowd looking on and homophobic slurs were made. Several other people hit and kicked the woman before she was finally pulled away from the crowd.

The attack was captured on cell phone video but FOX 4 is choosing to only show still shots from that video due to the graphic nature of it.

Family members who identified the woman as Muhlaysia Booker said what happened is unacceptable.

“Anyone who thinks it's acceptable just because she's transgender, something is wrong with them too. They need to seek some help. It's still a human being, period. Regardless of what her gender is, she's still a human being,” said Quan Booker, the victim's aunt.

Booker told police her attackers used homophobic slurs while beating her.

She was released from the hospital and is recovering from her injuries at home.

Thomas' bond amount has not yet been set.
