Student arrested in Seabreeze High School knife attack

A student at Seabreeze High School has been arrested after being involved in a fight and threatening someone with a knife.

Mercedes Drury,15, was taken into custody by the Daytona Beach Police Department. According to the department's incident report, Drury got into an altercation last week involving other Seabreeze High School students and some construction workers in a Dollar General parking lot during lunch.

A spokesman for the department said the students and workers got in an argument that involved both sides directing racial slurs at one another before Drury pulled out a knife and tried to cut one of the victims. They say that person was able to get the knife out of her hand until police arrived.

The staff at Seabreeze High School reportedly identified Drury from a cellphone video.

This isn't the only reports of violence involving students at the school.

On Tuesday, more than 700 students, nearly half of the school’s population, was reported absent after police got a call about an unidentified student saying they were going to bring a gun to campus on Tuesday and that quote "will be the end."

The police report says an officer interviewed two students who said they had seen a video and text messages with the threats.

The threat also comes after reports of a series of fights at and near the school over the past 2 months; fights police say may also be racially motivated.
