Space Coast Transportation Organization awarded $4.9 million grant to enhance safety at seven rail crossings

The Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization (SCTPO) has been awarded a $4.9 million Rail Crossing Elimination Grant from the Federal Railroad Administration to enhance safety at seven highway-railroad grade crossings in the county.

What we know: The project, which will involve the installation of 15 exit gates and two medians, aims to create "sealed" rail corridors by deterring vehicles from illegally navigating around crossing gates.

With an overall cost of $6.1 million, the initiative will be funded in part by a 20% local match provided by Brevard County, the City of Cocoa, and the City of Melbourne.

The federal grant will cover 80% of the cost.

Brightline Trains Florida, a key partner in the project, will oversee its design and construction.

"At the SCTPO, safety is our top priority as we plan for tomorrow's transportation system," said Georganna Gillette, Executive Director of SCTPO. "These enhancements represent a significant step forward to ensure the safety of all road users, in alignment with Vision Zero goals to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities on roadways."

The improvements include upgrading grade crossings at Michigan Avenue, Dixon Boulevard, and West Highlands Drive in Cocoa; Masterson Street, New Haven Avenue, and Line Street in Melbourne; and Holly Street in Micco.

Current crossings feature only two quadrant gates on approach lanes, leaving exit lanes without physical barriers. The new enhancements will add exit gates and medians to prevent vehicles from bypassing crossing arms.

Patrick Goddard, President of Brightline, commended the collaborative effort. "Brightline appreciates local communities coming together and proposing projects to enhance safety along the rail corridor," he said. "Safety starts with each of us, and Brightline continues to implore the community to exercise safe actions around the railroad."

The initiative also aims to reduce trespassing, prevent costly damage from road-rail crashes, and minimize traffic disruptions caused by collisions.

SCTPO and its partners are urging drivers to prioritize safety at rail crossings. "Never attempt to go around crossing arms," said Gillette. "We urge all road users to stay vigilant and prevent tragedies."

What we don't know: Construction timelines for the project have not yet been announced.
