Listening to a teacher talk about an Alaskan totem pole or seeing it in a book is one thing. Holding a scaled-down version in the palm of your hand is quite another.

Teachers across Seminole County schools can now bring artifacts to life for students using 3D printers.

Angela Tiffany used them in a recent lesson plan with her 4th grade robotics class. The students 'visited' Alaska using virtual reality goggles. Then they looked at totem poles via augmented reality using iPads. Finally, they designed and made their own totem poles using 3D printers.

Tiffany says, "Me just telling you something, you might not learn as well as if you actually had it there to see it and touch it and manipulate it yourself."

A Mt. Dora company recently donated enough of the printers that every Seminole County school has at least one. The News Station's Tom Johnson shows you how they are using them to teach more powerful lessons.
