Sanford police search for break in cold case

SANFORD, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - The Sanford Police Department is asking for help solving a 35 year old cold case.

In April of 1984, Stoney Fields was shot and killed after someone blindly shot into a home, according to investigators.

“I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe it – everything happened so fast. I had seen him that day, and that night he was gone,” said Brenda Gunn, Fields’ sister.

Sanford Police say the shooting happened W. 13th Street. The house doesn’t exist anymore, but officers say back then, several people were in the home when someone opened fire on it.

Investigators say 20-year-old Fields was visiting the house and was an innocent bystander.

“He was a very nice young man. Very easy going. Wasn’t violent. Everyone loved him,” Gunn said.

Sanford Police say one of their priorities is to get the information out on their cold cases. There’s a lot of hope in this community after a Seminole County case was just cracked.

Deputies arresting a man last month in the 1984 murder of Pam Cahanes after using new DNA technology.

“It gave me hope. It gave me hope,” Gunn said.

Gunn is confident that all these years later – someone knows something that could lead police to her brother’s killer.

“My father died not knowing the truth. We need to know the truth,” she said.
