OVIEDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Oviedo Police say five people were taken into custody Tuesday after a driver rammed an undercover officer’s car and sped off before crashing during rush hour.
Police say it all started while undercover officers were staking out the Oviedo Mall, looking for shoplifters.
“They saw a car pull up to Dillard's, backed up, four people got out of the car while the driver stayed in the car,” said Oviedo Police Lt. Dennis Lynch.
Lynch says officers believed the women may have gone into the store to steal but they ran out empty handed, after they were possibly scared off by a security guard.
Police say the undercover officers then tried to stop the car, but the driver rammed one of their cars before speeding off.
Lynch says an off-duty officer later spotted suspects going around 80 miles per hour on Aloma Avenue during rush hour. He says when the officer tried to stop them, the driver tried squeezing in between two cars, hitting them both and getting stuck.
Police say the officer held the five people at gunpoint until back up arrived. FHP says charges are pending against the driver. Officers say the women were taken into custody but no word on if they will be charged.
