Suspect dies after officer-involved shooting near busy Orlando intersection, police say
ORLANDO, Fla. - A man acting suspiciously and reportedly carrying a gun near a busy Orlando intersection was shot by a police officer Friday, authorities said.
Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said officers were called around 2:20 p.m. about a man dressed in black and carrying a weapon at the intersection of John Young Parkway and Old Winter Garden Road.
When officers arrived, they encountered the man and repeatedly ordered him to drop the gun, Smith said. The man refused and was shot by an officer. He was transported to a hospital and later died, according to a release by OPD on Saturday. He was identified as 63-year-old Marvin Martin.

Marvin was facing charges of resisting without violence, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and unlawful exhibition of a firearm.
He had a prior criminal history, including a conviction on a second-degree murder charge for which he served 20 years, according to Chief Smith. He was released from prison in 2023.

The incident comes amid heightened concerns for public safety following the recent pedestrian attack in New Orleans and a Tesla Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas.
"Anytime you receive that call where there's a person with a gun and walking around an intersection, you know it's one of those kinds of things that they're doing it for a reason," Chief Smith said. "Most people are not going to show a gun or brandish a gun in that way, so for that to happen, you know as an officer when you roll into that call, this is something bad, and you've got to deal with it."
The Orlando Police Department and Orange County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation.
Surveillance video from Wayne's World BMW across the street shows someone dressed in all black pacing John Young Parkway for nearly 30 minutes before they're confronted by law enforcement. At one point, an Orange County deputy drove by, and the suspect stopped, seemed to face the deputy and raised his left arm.Though it's not clear in the video, police said the suspect had been waving a gun.The video shows two more deputies arrive with lights and sirens. The video ends before any shots were fired.
As with all shootings involving a police officer, the case will be investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The officer who shot the man is a veteran of the force who has been placed on paid administrative leave.
This marks the second shooting involving an Orlando police officer this week. On Monday, a man was fatally shot during a reported domestic disturbance in The Willows neighborhood near Evans High School.
