OUC board approves ‘PeakSHIFT’ program

The Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) is moving forward with its new "PeakSHIFT" program, a rate structure designed to encourage energy conservation by charging higher rates for electricity used during peak hours.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) is moving forward with its new "PeakSHIFT" program, a rate structure designed to encourage energy conservation by charging higher rates for electricity used during peak hours. 

The program, which could raise monthly bills by up to $15 for some customers, drew passionate feedback at a public meeting Tuesday.  

Critics, including clean-energy advocates, elected officials, and concerned residents, packed the meeting to voice opposition. Many argued the program would disproportionately impact low-income households, especially during heat waves. 

"It can unintentionally harm low-income households and renters, who face unique barriers," said Laura Betts, an Orlando resident.

Supporters, however, emphasized the importance of incentivizing energy conservation. 

"This program is not just a step forward but a testament to OUC's proven track record of delivering below-average rates," said Bishop Derrick McRae of The Experience Christian Center in Orlando.  

OUC defended the initiative as a necessary measure for sustainability and efficient energy use. The program is set to take effect in July.
