Orlando weather: Could arctic blast bring snow to Florida?
ORLANDO, Fla. - It will be clear, cool and breezy overnight. The cooler air has begun to settle into the region, dropping our temperatures through the 40s. Winds will be coming in from the NW at 5-15 mph.
We're keeping the sunshine rolling into the weekend! High pressure sitting over the Midwest will pull cooler and drier air into the region and that will drop our highs into the low 60s and lows will linger in the 40s.
LOOKING AHEAD: A shot of warmer air pops our temperatures into the 70s on Sunday and Monday, but this warming trend will not last long. Monday is our next chance of rain as a cold front passes through and this will take the FRIGID ARCTIC air in Northern Canada and funnel it into the southeast. Highs will be mostly in the low 60s and 50s next week. Lows will be in the 40s and 30s.
Will arctic air bring snow to Florida?
No snow is in the forecast as of now, but if we were to get snow in Florida, it would most likely be along Interstate 10 if an arctic air mass was to move squarely toward the Gulf Coast and create an area of low pressure near Tallahassee, Florida, which then moves into the Carolinas.
On the north and west sides of the system's low pressure, sometimes a few inches can fall – but it seems to only happen a few times per century.
What would need to happen for it to snow in Florida?
To get snow, we'd have to be oriented on the backside of a huge arctic cold front where sometimes (quite rarely) we can get, "Gulf effect" flurries as cold air blows over the comparatively warm Gulf of Mexico waters – this can impact Tampa Bay, points north.
Sometimes, on a northeast wind, the Atlantic side can catch ocean-effect flurries. Usually any "ocean effect" snow in Florida is very light activity and results in no measurable accumulation.
