An Orlando police officer was injured in a crash near the University of Central Florida late Friday evening.  Three cars, including the patrol car, were involved in the crash, which happened around 9:30 p.m. on University Blvd. at Heather Glen Blvd.

University Blvd. was closed off to traffic for some time as troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol investigated.  Tow trucks were seen hauling away the impacted vehicles away just before 11 p.m. as road crews were working to clear debris.

"The crash occurred when a pickup truck, driven by 38-year-old Dominick Edward Mendoza, pulled out, into the direct path of the patrol car, that was traveling westbound on University Blvd.," said FHP Lt. Kim Montes.  "The patrol car struck the pickup truck. Another vehicle was struck after the initial impact."

The police officer was transported by ambulance to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Mendoza was arrested on a charge of DUI.  The crash happened around the same time some 50 law enforcement officers were engaged in a DUI crackdown operation near the university.

The crash remains under investigation by the FHP.
