OpenAI is testing a new feature that would directly challenge Google in the AI search engine space.

SearchGPT is a prototype of new search features designed to combine the strength of OpenAI’s artificial intelligence models with information from the web to give users quicker and timely answers with up-to-date information while offering links to relevant sources, according to OpenAI's website.

This feature could create competition with Google and impact the flow of internet users searching for news and timely information.

Open AI said on its website that it plans to get feedback on the prototype from a group of users and publishers.

Open AI’s test of SearchGPT comes after Google upended its search engine in May, with AI-generated written summaries now appearing at the top of search results.

According to the Associated Press, the summaries try to quickly answer a user’s search request so they don’t have to click a link and go to another website for more information.

Google’s remodel occurred after a year of testing with a small group of users and resulted in errors showing the risks of giving up the search for information to AI chatbots.

The Associated Press reported that Microsoft, a business partner of OpenAI, is also testing artificial intelligence summaries on its Bing search engine.

The Associated Press contributed to this report. This story was reported from Washington, D.C.
