SAINT CLOUD, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - A Saint Cloud police officer is recovering at home after he was hit by a fleeing suspect's car.
The cul-de-sac where it happened is quiet once again, after a not-so-quiet night. Shattered auto-glass was the only sign of what happened on what resident Hudson Smith described as a peaceful street.
“This is a quiet neighborhood, nothing really happens here,” he said.
Saint Cloud police say just after midnight an officer pulled a man over on Cypress Grove Court for a traffic stop. But police spokesman, Sgt. Anthony Miller, said the car didn't stop, it sped-away, knocking the officer to the ground.
“He was able to get a shot off and strike the driver's side window of the suspect's vehicle,” Miller said.
Miller said that after the officer shot-out the car's window the suspect bailed out of the car. The car, though, kept going down the street and smashing into a parked car.
Police now have the car as evidence, and Miller said they know who they're looking for. “We’re pretty confident we have him identified and based on the information we have we’re going to follow up that way.”
Miller added that the officer is home recovering from minor injuries. “He’s doing good. He is on his way home at this point. He’s a little banged up but he’ll be just fine.”
