Motorized scooters may be coming to Downtown Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - First shared bikes, now motorized shared scooters.

They may be coming to Downtown Orlando. 

Lime, the company that operates the green bikes, is hoping to expand to offer scooters. 

The City of Orlando would have to approve the expansion. 

Officials say they are reviewing the idea, but would not make a decision until November, when the pilot program for the Lime bikes wraps up. 

Until then, officials are learning all they can about motorized scooter programs.

“Collecting the data and kind of collecting best practices from those communities around the country that already have bike share and scooter share programs in place, just to make sure there aren’t any things in our ordinance that we’re overlooking,” said F.J. Flynn, City of Orlando Deputy Chief Administrative Officer.

City officials say if the scooters are given the OK, safety, placement and ridership would all be looked at during a pilot program to determine feasibility.

"What we'll do is we'll, like we did with bike share, we'll work with the industry to craft policies and procedures that are good for us," Flynn said.
