SARASOTA, Fla. - A 12-year-old girl was flown to All Children’s Hospital Monday morning after she was run over by her mother on the first day of school, Florida Highway Patrol said.
According to FHP, a mother let her daughter out of the car in the right turn lane on Myrtle Street west of Newtown Boulevard, in front of Booker Middle School in Sarasota.
Troopers say the girl dropped her bag and, as she reached under the SUV to get the items that fell out, her mother ran her over.

"Florida Highway Patrol wants to reiterate how incredibly important it is to make sure that you see your child, not only exit the vehicle, but then get out of the path of the vehicle and not make any type of assumption. Here we are day one and we've already had a tragedy," said Senior Trooper Kenneth Watson.
The child sustained critical injuries, according to FHP, and remained in critical condition late Monday.
