More test kits, swabs on the way to Florida as testing is expected to ramp up, Governor DeSantis says

ORLANDO, Fla. - Governor Ron DeSantis says that more coronavirus test kits are on the way to Florida.

The Governor spoke during two news conferences on Thursday. In the first one, he said that the state has already started to receive the swabs needed for testing. More are on their way. Several thousand testing kits are also on the way and those could perform about 625,000 tests if the state has all the swabs needed.

Governor DeSantis affirmed though that Florida is in a much better place now than a week ago.

He also went on to warn millennials to take the COVID-19 pandemic seriously, citing that "you could be relatively healthy, in your 20', and you can wound up in the hospital. It may not totally put you out of commission for good but it's not something that you want to mess with."

More testing is supposed to start on Friday, meaning results will come in faster, especially as we no longer have to send samples to the CDC in Atlanta.

During the second news conference, Governor DeSantis said that while more drive-thru testing sites will open tomorrow, that these will only be open to people who are 65 or older, who are symptomatic, or who have just been on a cruise or to an affected area. Anyone else will be turned away for now and you must be in a vehicle to be tested. Pedestrians will not be allowed.

"We are right now living through the biggest crunch for medical supplies than we've ever seen in our country's history. I came in and I saw these folks with these N-95 masks. I'm having dreams about N-95 masks cause that's all people are talking about. They're talking about these swabs. Everybody in the world is trying to procure this stuff," he said.
