An Iowa woman is hoping to return a wedding dress to its rightful owner after finding it on the side of the road.

Denise Gannon of Rippey said she spotted the gown as she and her husband were driving along Highway 144 on June 12.

"We saw something white on the side of the road, and it was still there later in the evening," she told FOX Television Stations. "It was supposed to rain that evening and he [husband] said, 'I think that's a wedding dress.'  I'm like, 'No, I don't think it is.'"

"So we stopped, and I'd be darned if it wasn't a wedding dress just blowing in the wind," she continued.

Gannon said she picked up the dress along with the garment bag lying next to it.

She posted the wedding dress on Facebook, hoping somebody would claim it. Gannon said she has received inquiries from women believing the dress was theirs, but in the end, Gannon realized the dress didn't belong to them.

"Another girl contacted me yesterday, and she thought it was her dress," Gannon explained. "But her story doesn't quite add up. I think the information she had was probably from the [other] article she read."

Gannon said if no one claims the dress in the next few weeks, she'll donate it to a woman who makes angel dresses.

As the town speculates on how the wedding dress ended up on the side of the road, Gannon believes there's no special backstory to her find.

"I think it honestly probably just blew out of the back of the pickup or the top of one of those luggage carriers," she said.

This story was reported from Los Angeles.
