Man tries to flee from police by running into ocean
COCOA BEACH, Fla. (FOX 35 Orlando) - An Orlando man is in the Brevard County Jail, after he led law enforcement officers on a wet pursuit.
What started out with an arrest at a adult night club, ended up with a big capture in the ocean.
"One of the policemen dived in from what I saw," said beachgoer Ron Follis.
Law enforcement officers were drenched after a dip in the Atlantic Ocean, going after Kristian Amezquita. Amezquita is accused of pointing a gun at the head of another customer outside Cheaters, at 5450 N Atlantic Ave, Cocoa Beach. Police said the victim tried breaking up a fight between Amezquita and his girlfriend.
"During questioning the male fled the area, our officers pursued on foot," said Corp. Michael Mock, of Cocoa Beach Police Department.
Officers said Amezquita ran away from the club, onto the beach and into the water to try to escape.
"We saw a lot of commotion. We saw the boats with the lights on," said beachgoer Gordon Shepard.
Investigators were not sure if Amezquita was armed, so they proceeded with caution.
"We were able to keep our eyes on him. Floated south and he eventually agreed to be taken into custody," Mock said.
"We saw them dragging him in from the water," Follis added.
Officers said Amezquita's girlfriend was also arrested, accused of hiding the gun he allegedly pointed at the other club patron.
Amezquita is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Officers said he has four felony convictions and is being held in jail on no bond.
