Hurricane Milton: Over 100 tornado warnings in Florida so far, NWS says

More than 100 tornado warnings have been issued across Florida as Hurricane Milton approaches the state's Gulf Coast, according to the National Weather Service.

Tornado warnings have been issued in Orlando and Central Florida, South Florida, and in in the Tampa Bay metro over the last several hours after the outerbands from Hurricane Milton spread out across the state.

The National Weather Service Office in Greensville-Spartanburg, South Carolina posted a graphic on X (formerly Twitter) of all the tornado warnings that had been issued - a total of 133, as of 5:30 p.m. 

Here's the breakdown:

  • NWS Miami: 49
  • NWS Melbourne: 35
  • Tampa: 49

"Stay safe Florida, we are wishing everyone well," the NWS chapter said.

Numerous tornado warnings have been issued in Central Florida over the last several hours in Brevard, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties, to name a few. Some have been radar indicated or radar confirmed.

At one point, there were nearly a dozen active tornado warnings – either confirmed tornadoes on the ground or radar-indicated tornadoes – across Florida, according to FOX 35's meteorologists.

Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall on Florida's west side Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.  Officials have encouraged Floridians to hunker down until the storm passes at this point. The areas of Tampa Bay could see significant storm surge, flooding, and damaging winds. Central Florida is expected to see torrential rainfall, damaging winds, flooding, and tornadoes as Milton's outer bands sweep across.

  • Stay away from windows and doors
  • If driving, get to the closest shelter. If unable to, get to the lowest point in your car and cover your head.
