Holly Hill Police Chief reflects on first 100 days in office
HOLLY HILL, Fla. - Holly Hill Police Chief Byron Williams stepped into his role in July, inheriting a department under scrutiny after the resignation of former Chief Jeff Miller amid an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and other disturbing claims.
Williams says the challenges presented an opportunity for growth and transformation.
"I see it as an opportunity, not as a challenge," Williams said of his first 100 days leading the department.
The department had faced public outcry for a cultural shift in leadership, following the resignation of Miller, one of his captains, and a sergeant. At a June city council meeting, one resident voiced their concerns, saying, "Some of these are investigators? I just sat there with this report thinking, how could this be?"
Since then, Williams has worked to rebuild trust within the community and among the department’s staff.
"The positivity around this community has been awesome and unbelievable," Williams said. "If the morale of the staff is not good, your organization is not going to be in a good place."
Under Williams’ leadership, the department has introduced several initiatives, including a new K-9 program, a drone program, and a burglar box program, with more projects in the pipeline.
"We’re looking to incorporate a lot more tools and programs here in the city of Holly Hill. I can’t wait to see those things go forth," Williams said.
With a focus on accountability and innovation, Williams said he is committed to driving positive change for both the department and the community it serves.
