DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - The Daytona Beach Police Department on Tuesday announced the funeral arraignments for a recruit who collapsed during a training drill last week and died on Monday.
Thomas Coulter, 25, collapsed Friday during an exercise that included stops for push-ups and stretching. Police Chief Craig Capri says Coulter hadn't complained about not feeling well before the exercise. He says the exercises were not considered strenuous.
"When we lose an officer, it's a tough time," Capri said. "He was a young man, he was 25 years old. Sometimes things happen that are out of our control. It's in God's hands."
Coulter was taken to a hospital after his collapse and seemed to be improving but his condition worsened over the weekend.
A viewing is scheduled for Thursday, May 24, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Lohman Funeral Homes at 1423 Bellevue Ave. in Daytona Beach. The funeral is scheduled for Friday, May 25, starting at 11 a.m. at the News Journal Center, located at 221 N. Beach St. in Daytona Beach.
There will be a procession leaving from the News Journal Center to Lohman Funeral Homes for the burial services. The route will be along S. Beach Street to Bellevue Avenue, heading west to Lohman Funeral Home.
The Daytona Beach Fire Department will salute fallen Officer Coulter with a show of support and respect for his public safety service with an American flag display during the procession at Fire Station #1, at the corner of Orange Avenue and Beach Street.
A GoFundMe page has been established by Officer Coulter’s wife Jazmin to help offset her medical school expenses.
