Former Florida Gators, NFL player arrested on drug and weapons charges: Deputies

Deputies said they have arrested a former Florida Gators defensive end and ex-NFL player on charges involving drugs and weapons.

Reports show Earl James Okine, 35, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm while in the commission of a felony and possession of marijuana less than 20 grams.

What led to the arrest of Earl James Okine?

What we know:

The Alachua County Sheriff's Office said a deputy pulled over Okine on Wednesday night after he failed to stop at a stop sign.

During the traffic stop, sheriffs said probable cause was established for them to search Okine's vehicle. 

Reports show deputies found 1.9 grams of crystalized Methamphetamine, a small amount of Marijuana, and a Smith and Wesson handgun that was loaded with an extended magazine containing multiple rounds of ammunition inside the car.

The contents of the car then led to Okine's arrest.

Who is Earl James Okine?

Okine played football for the Florida Gators from 2008 to 2012.

He then proceeded on to play both NFL and arena football. Teams he has played for include the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions.
