Florida woman who smiled in viral mugshot sentenced in fatal DUI crash

An Ocala woman convicted of driving under the influence and causing a crash in Marion County that killed a 60-year-old woman was sentenced Thursday.

Angenette Marie Welk, 45, was sentenced to 11 years in prison after pleadeing no contest to a charge of DUI manslaughter. Welk was also fined $5,000 and given 15 years of probation.

 



 

 

In addition, the judge also ordered Welk to write a letter every year in May saying what she's learned from the crash.

During her sentencing hearing, Welk expressed remorse for her actions.

"I would like to start by saying how sorry I am for this tragic loss. You’ve lost a mother, a sister, an aunt, a loved one. I don’t have the words."

In May 2018, police say Welk was driving on U.S. 27 when she struck Sandra Clarkston’s car from behind, causing Clarkston to slam into the back of a tractor-trailer. 

Clarkston, who was taken to a local hospital where she died.
