FOX 35's Chris Lindsay learns more after a Palm Coast Fire Police volunteer member was hit by a car while on shift and critically injured.

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. - The Palm Coast Fire Department says a Florida fire police member was hit by a car and seriously injured while responding to the scene of a crash Tuesday.

Palm Coast Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill hosted a press conference Wednesday morning, in which he said the volunteer member, Steven Brooks, currently is in critical but stable condition.

What we know about the incident

The department reported responding around 4:57 p.m. Tuesday to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Seminole Woods Parkway and Sesame Drive.

Officials state the incident involved a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Once officers arrived at the scene, they said they began directing traffic away from the crash.

While managing traffic in the street, the department says Brooks was struck by a car.

Brooks suffered serious injuries and was declared a trauma alert due to a loss of consciousness, officials state.

Firefighters report Brooks was airlifted to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach by Flagler County Fire Rescue Fireflight.

Berryhill said the driver of the car that hit Brooks remained at the scene and there was no evidence of "bad acting."

Berryhill believes the sun may have been a factor in the driver of the vehicle not seeing Brooks.

Fire police member in critical, but stable, condition

Berryhill said on or around an emergency scene has become one of the most hazardous places for first responders.

Berryhill said Brooks has four broken bones, as well as internal injuries.

"(Steven) is a really good man," Berryhill said. "You don't like to see your team's blood on the ground, and we saw it yesterday. Luckily, we believe that there's a ton of hope about Steven's condition, and we're going to go see him in a little bit."
