ST. CLOUD, Fla. - It’s been one year since a freak accident left a St. Cloud boy badly burned. The little boy has been recovering since and now his mother has a message to other parents.
A young boy from St. Cloud suffered from second and third-degree burns on his legs and hand after an accident while camping in 2024. The two-year-old was running and playing with a bubble wand when he fell backward into a fire pit during a camping trip on New Year's Day last year.
Now, one year later, 3-year-old Finny is back to relatively normal, and his mother is grateful.
"It was very scary," said Tabitha Shay. "I just held him and thanked God honestly, because it could have been so much worse."
The mom has since learned that the nylon material on his gym shorts made the burns on his legs worse, and took the longest to heal.
"The melting pants are what caused most of his burns. The pants melting to the back of his legs," said Shay.
Now, the Saint Cloud mom has a message for other families.
"Do your research. Figure out what clothes your kids are wearing near fires, what's the safest, and honestly stay as close as possible. I was only like ten feet away from him," she said. "I know now we don't wear gym shorts or nylon anything when we're near any kind of fire or making s'mores or anything like that. It's always jeans and cotton."
