FHP investigate claims of hit-and-run crash that left 1 dead
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - The driver in a deadly hit-and-run is now saying the crash was not a hit-and-run, because he didn’t hit anybody.
Florida Highway Patrol says new video evidence brought to them on Tuesday proves that driver’s innocence. The driver’s lawyer told FOX 35 his client will likely remain free.
After a public plea for help, Amber Roach got what she wanted.
“Grow a conscience. That's it,” said Amber Roach, the stepdaughter of victim Jefferey Brookshire.
“He mentioned that there was this video which is pretty astounding,” said the driver’s attorney Victor Mead.
Florida Highway Patrol says the driver thought to have been involved in a deadly crash in Brevard County Saturday night turned himself in. It’s the crash that killed Amber Roach’s stepdad Jefferey Brookshire. But the driver showed up with his own dash cam video that his lawyer says proves his innocence.
“It really exonerated the client completely because it showed that clearly he had not struck him,” said Mead.
FHP now says the red car they’d been looking for wasn’t involved in the crash after all. Initially they said a red Chevy Malibu and Jefferey Brookshier in his blue Mustang were driving aggressively Saturday night on State Route 528 in Brevard County when the red car crashed into Brookshire’s Mustang, causing him to cross the median and hit another vehicle. Now they say the new video shows the Mustang was never hit by the red car.
The driver’s attorney also says the good condition of the car helped his case.
“They apparently looked at the video for around 20 minutes and then checked the car, walked around, took pictures, to see if there's any damage, which there's none,” said Mead.
FHP is still investigating, but the driver and his attorney are grateful for the $50 Amazon dash cam.
“I told him that I thought it might have been the best investment that he ever made.”
Three other people were injured in the crash.
